Where do you go when a tornado warning is issued—and your building doesn't have a designated storm shelter?
New NOAA-funded research from the University of Missouri will examine the tornado sheltering challenges faced by people living in apartments and multifamily housing, including access to safe shelter, preparedness planning and the barriers residents may face during severe weather.
It's an important area of tornado-safety research. For people living without a basement or designated shelter, identifying the safest available option before severe weather arrives can make a critical difference.
We're looking forward to seeing what this research finds and how it may help communities improve tornado preparedness and shelter access.

🌪️ What should you do during a tornado warning if your home DOESN’T have a basement?
“Go to the basement” is familiar tornado-safety advice—but millions of Americans live in homes without one.
And there’s another important distinction homeowners should understand:
🏠 A sturdy site-built home without a basement and a mobile or manufactured home require different tornado plans.
In our newest Granger ISS homeowner resource, we cover:
• Where to shelter in a sturdy home without a basement
• Why mobile and manufactured homes require a different plan
• What apartment residents should consider
• Why you shouldn't wait until you see a tornado to act
• Tornado Watch vs. Tornado Warning
• Why vehicles and highway overpasses aren't good shelter plans
• How to build your family's tornado plan BEFORE severe weather arrives
• When a residential tornado shelter may become part of that plan
The most important takeaway?
Know where you're going before the weather turns dangerous.
