Before comparing individual tornado shelter features, it helps to know what questions to ask. Review our guide to 15 questions every homeowner should ask before buying a tornado shelter, including what to ask about the manufacturer, testing, installation, materials, warranty and long-term support.
Superior Construction
The Granger ISS Tornado Shelter stands out as a premier
choice in storm protection due to its unparalleled construction quality and advanced safety features. Engineered with the highest standards in mind, the Granger ISS provides a robust and reliable solution for safeguarding individuals and families during severe weather events. This shelter is designed to exceed FEMA and ICC 500 standards, which are the benchmarks for tornado and storm shelters. Such rigorous adherence to safety regulations ensures occupants are provided with the utmost protection.
The Granger ISS is rotationally molded from Polyethylene, a durable material. Polyethylene is known for its resistance to impact, chemicals, and UV damage, making it an ideal choice for various applications including industrial storage solutions, agricultural tanks, and outdoor furniture. The body of the ISS consists of double wall construction, with a ½ inch wall on both the inside and outside. This double wall ensures that the shelter remains robust and structurally sound even under heavy use and extreme conditions.
Reverse Taper Design
The design and shape of the ISS are among its most distinctive features, showcasing a reverse taper that is wider at the bottom than at the top. This unique configuration permits the unit to be installed directly into the ground without requiring any extra anchoring systems. As a result, there is no need for messy concrete or complicated installation, making it the easiest shelter to install currently available.
Easiest Installation Available
A standard installation of the Granger ISS generally takes
four hours or less. The procedure is straightforward: dig a hole, position the
unit, make sure the shelter is level on all sides and backfill with the soil that was removed. This shelter can be installed outside existing homes, in new constructions, or retrofitted into designated areas.
Even a shelter designed for straightforward installation should be installed with careful attention to property conditions, drainage, excavation and manufacturer requirements. Before selecting an installer, review these questions to ask a tornado shelter contractor before hiring them.
Triple Panel, FEMA 320 and FEMA 361 exceeding door
In any underground shelter, the door is paramount, providing
the essential protection against tornadoes. To guarantee safety, doors should
adhere to the FEMA 320 or FEMA 361 standards, which evaluate their strength
against flying debris at wind speeds of 250 MPH. The door design of the ISS is
particularly noteworthy, featuring a double wall polyethylene exterior panel, a double wall polyethylene interior panel and a polycarbonate layer secured in between the double wall polyethylene panels for maximum protection.
The door of the Granger ISS features a limited lifetime warranty. If your door is damaged in a verifiable tornado, Granger will work with the homeowner to get the door replaced at no charge for the door.
The door of the Granger ISS was successfully tested to meet or exceed FEMA 320 and FEMA 361 standards at Texas Tech University’s Wind lab. See the video for the Granger ISS door test below.
Homeowners should look beyond the word tested and understand exactly what was evaluated, where the testing was performed and what the available evidence demonstrates. Our tornado shelter buyer's guide explains the questions to ask when evaluating testing claims and documentation.
Dual Gas Assisted Shock System
Most any door that has been proven to meet or exceed FEMA 320 or FEMA 361 debris impact standards will be heavy, including the polyethylene door of the ISS. To make entry and exit easier and safer, each Granger ISS door includes two gas-assisted shocks that make opening the door much easier than most all other shelters on the market.
Triple Locking System
In compliance with FEMA and ICC 500 specifications, The Granger ISS door offers a 3 point locking system to ensure the highest level of safety and protection. The 3 point latching system is easy to use and capable of being secured by most occupants of the shelter.
Articulating Handrails
Every Granger ISS has articulating handrails that can be used for safe and easy entry into the unit. Once everyone is in the unit, simply pull the pin and lower each of the handrails to their resting position. Close the door and lock all (3) of the locks and wait the Tornado or storm out in near absolute protection!
Easy 3 Step Entrance
The Granger ISS features a durable, 3 step entrance down to the seating of the underground tornado shelter. The vertical entry is easy for most people and does not impeded on valuable interior space. During a disaster such as a tornado, timing is paramount for safety and entry into the Granger ISS only takes seconds!
LED Light
Each Granger ISS is equipped with LED lighting. Upon entry, simply touch the light to illuminate the interior when the door is closed. Each unit includes one LED light; however, additional lighting can be installed if so desired.
Molded In Seating
The Granger ISS exceeds FEMA requirements for 6 adults though several more can fit in an emergency. Molded in circular seating allows occupants to sit comfortably with seating taking up as little space in the interior of the unit as possible. Taller occupants will be able to sit straight with plenty of headroom, or stretch their legs by standing in the entry area.
Color Doors
Minimize the look of your storm shelter or customize the door to blend in with your home. The unique feature of a colored door and vent allow the Granger ISS to look the way you want it to. Choose green to blend in with grass and landscaping, gray to blend in with a concrete floor or maybe even match your home.
Guaranteed Not To Float
Unlike less capable designs, the Granger ISS offers a limited lifetime warranty not to float out of the ground! Granger works with a variety of qualified installers for those who wish to subcontract out the installation themselves. Any shelter installed by an approved installer is guaranteed not to float!
Limited Lifetime Warranty
The Granger ISS is warrantied through the lifetime of the original owner for cracking, leaking, rotting, rusting or any type of material deterioration of the body of the unit. This warranty also covers any other material or manufacturers defects.
